The people in charge of the Trudeau Foundation, a charity named after former Canadian prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, have quit suddenly because of a donation with ties to China. The charity funds doctoral researchers and was set up to honour Justin Trudeau’s father. Although the money was returned, the pressure from politics around the donation and wider concern over Chinese interference led to the resignation of the foundation’s CEO and board. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is not involved with the foundation, has faced allegations of election meddling by Beijing. The allegations are being investigated, and China denies any wrongdoing. The resignation of the foundation’s leadership comes ahead of an appearance by Mr Trudeau’s chief of staff before a parliamentary committee investigating suspected foreign election interference.
