According to official results reported by Radio Pakistan, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged as the largest party in the local government by-elections held on Sunday in Sindh. The PPP won seven out of eleven union committees (UCs) in Karachi, while Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) secured four UCs. PPP also won two out of four union councils in Hyderabad and a majority in all the districts where elections were held.
Overall, the largest number of seats in the local government polls in Karachi were secured by the PPP with 98 UCs, followed by JI with 89 seats and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with 42 seats. The PPP’s victory in the by-elections comes after the party had won the majority of seats in the previous local government elections held in 2015.
The by-elections were held to fill vacancies in local government seats after the resignation or death of previous office bearers. More than 3,000 polling stations were set up across Sindh for the by-elections.
The victory is expected to boost the PPP’s morale ahead of the general elections scheduled for 2023. The PPP has been facing a decline in popularity due to allegations of corruption and poor governance. However, the party’s win in the local government by-elections may suggest a resurgence in the party’s support base in the province.
