The caretaker Punjab government has handed over “proofs” of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) alleged role in the recent terrorist attacks on sensitive military installations to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). In a briefing held at the Chief Minister House, Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja and ECP members were presented with evidence regarding the violence that occurred in the province on May 9.
According to an official handout, the chief election commissioner and ECP members were provided with solid evidence demonstrating the involvement of a political party in the May 9 terrorist incidents. The evidence included pictures, videos, and messaging, revealing connections between the attackers and the present political leadership through geo-fencing.
The violence erupted in various parts of the country following the arrest of PTI Chairman Imran Khan in a corruption case. Specific targets, including public and private properties, as well as sensitive government installations, were attacked and vandalized. The historical Jinnah House, serving as the residence of the Lahore corps commander, was set ablaze, and the army’s General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was attacked. The iconic Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar was also torched.
During the briefing, caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed that a political party had brought shame to the entire nation on May 9, stating that an obnoxious game was played under the guise of politics. He emphasized that the attacks on military installations were part of a planned strategy and estimated losses of around Rs6 billion.
The Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) provided a detailed briefing on the attack on Jinnah House and other military installations, while the additional interior chief secretary presented information on the damages caused by the terrorist attacks. The officials informed the CEC and ECP members that a total of 256 violent incidents occurred over a three-day period, specifically targeting military installations and locations.
The briefing revealed that five people were killed, 127 police officers and 15 civilians were injured, and a significant number of vehicles and buildings were damaged during the violent incidents. The participants condemned the terrorist attacks and expressed complete solidarity with the Pakistan Army.
CEC Raja commended the bold and excellent steps taken by the Punjab government to protect the masses in the current situation. He reiterated the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring fair, just, and peaceful general elections, emphasizing their impartiality and support for the caretaker government. The security arrangements for the upcoming general elections in Punjab were reviewed, and it was agreed to reassess them in light of the present situation.
The meeting was attended by ECP members from different provinces, ECP Secretary, Special Secretary, Punjab Election Commissioner, and other officials. The ECP expressed its full support to the Punjab government and pledged to provide all possible assistance to hold free and fair elections.
