The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast predicting heavy rain in Karachi on June 14 and 15 as cyclone Biparjoy makes landfall. The city is also expected to experience high temperatures, reaching up to 40 to 41 degrees Celsius. Residents are advised to increase their water intake to avoid the risk of heatstroke, as the usual sea breezes are suspended in Karachi. The extremely severe cyclone Biparjoy, located 600km south of Karachi in the east-central Arabian Sea, has been moving northward. It is projected to approach the southeast coast of Sindh, leading to widespread wind, dust, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall in various districts. Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparker, Mirpurkhas, and Umerkot districts are likely to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall accompanied by squally winds of 80-100 Km/hour, gusting up to 120 Km/hour from June 13 to 17.In Karachi, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allayar, Shaheed Benazirabad, and Sanghar districts, there is a possibility of dust, thunderstorm, and rain with a few heavy falls, along with squally winds of 60-80 Km/hour from June 14 to 16.The PMD also warned of high-intensity winds that could cause damage to vulnerable structures, including solar panels. Furthermore, a storm surge of 3-3.5 meters (8-12 feet) is expected at the landfall point, particularly in Keti Bandar and surrounding areas, posing a risk of inundation to low-lying settlements.Residents and authorities in Karachi are urged to take necessary precautions and stay updated on weather advisories to ensure public safety during the approaching cyclone and heavy rainfall.
