TDTOP reports United States Attorney Merrick Garland has defended his appointment of Jack Smith as the independent special counsel for the criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump. Despite criticism from Trump himself, who called Smith a “fraud” and “crazy” in his social media posts, Garland reiterated his support for the attorney general. Trump recently dismissed the 37-count indictment filed by Smith, accusing him of knowingly keeping classified national security documents and conspiring to hide them from federal authorities.
Garland pointed out that he appointed Smith to demonstrate the Justice Department’s commitment to independence and accountability. As head of the Justice Department, Garland said Smith is an experienced attorney who has assembled a team of experienced and qualified attorneys and staff dedicated to promoting integrity and the rule of law. Garland said any questions about this will be answered by the documents Smith’s team filed in court. During Trump’s appearance in court, Smith sat next to his fellow attorneys, just feet away from Trump at the defendant’s table. However, there is no relationship between them.
