London, June 21, 2023 – In a press conference held in London today, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer revealed that all legal obstacles hindering the return of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif to the country have been eliminated. The minister emphasized that consultations are underway and that Nawaz Sharif will soon lead the party’s election campaign.
Addressing the media, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed his belief that the law for lifetime disqualification was inappropriate, highlighting that even individuals convicted of murder are qualified to participate in parliamentary contests after a five-year period. He stated that Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer will make the decision regarding whether to seek bail for his return.
Regarding trials in military courts, Tarar stated that the government will not grant pardons to those who have attacked defense institutions. However, he assured that the fundamental rights of the accused will be safeguarded during military court proceedings. Tarar acknowledged the division among lawyers regarding military trials but clarified that a decision has not been made regarding conducting trials of political leaders or women in military courts.
PML-N UK President Zubair Gul was present at the press conference, demonstrating the party’s support for Nawaz Sharif. Earlier in the day, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi had a meeting with Nawaz Sharif in London, dispelling rumors of differences within the party. This meeting followed Abbasi’s exclusion from any position in the recently-held intra-party elections of PML-N.
The meeting took place at the office of Hussain Nawaz, the son of the party supremo. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi categorically denied any possibility of forming a new political party and reassured that there were no internal conflicts within the PML-N.
