ISLAMABAD: President Arif Alvi has given his approval for the appointment of senior puisne judge Justice Qazi Faez Isa as the next chief justice of Pakistan. This significant development was announced on Wednesday, marking a new chapter in the country’s judiciary.According to Article 179 of the Constitution, Justice Isa’s appointment will take effect on September 17, 2023, coinciding with the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, Umar Atta Bandial, on September 16.When Justice Isa takes the oath of office on September 17, he will assume the position of the 29th chief justice of Pakistan. President Alvi will have the honor of administering the oath to Justice Isa in a formal ceremony.Justice Isa, born on October 26, 1959, in Quetta, has an impressive background. His father, the late Qazi Mohammad Isa of Pishin, played a prominent role in the Pakistan movement, while his grandfather, Qazi Jalaluddin, served as the prime minister of Khanate of Kalat during pre-partition India.Having been enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court from Balochistan, Justice Isa has dedicated over 27 years to the practice of law. He has appeared before all the high courts, the Federal Shariat Court, and the Supreme Court, gaining extensive experience and expertise.Throughout his career, Justice Isa has held various esteemed positions, including membership in the Balochistan High Court Bar Association, Sindh High Court Bar Association, and Life Member of the Supreme Court Bar Association. He has also served as the chief justice of Balochistan during different periods.Known for his commitment to the Constitution and the rule of law, Justice Isa has consistently demonstrated these principles in his judgments. Furthermore, he has been actively involved as amicus curiae in cases referred to him by high courts and the Supreme Court. Additionally, he has conducted international arbitrations, showcasing his legal prowess on a global scale.Another notable achievement of Justice Isa is his establishment of a transparent system for the recruitment of officials and officers in high courts through advertising, emphasizing fairness and meritocracy.On September 5, 2014, Justice Isa was sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, marking the beginning of his distinguished tenure on the highest judicial platform of the country.With his wealth of experience, dedication to the Constitution, and unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, Justice Qazi Faez Isa is poised to lead Pakistan’s judiciary as the next chief justice, ensuring justice and fairness for all.
