Pakistani captain Babar Azam shared his thoughts on his remarkable century against New Zealand in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup held at Edgbaston. On June 26, 2019, Azam stepped up when Pakistan lost two early wickets with only 44 runs on the board and went on to score one of the best centuries of his career.Recounting the unforgettable day, Azam mentioned that Pakistan managed to restrict New Zealand to a manageable total. “We managed to restrict New Zealand to a good total, but the spinners started to get assistance after the rain,” stated the Pakistan skipper. The 28-year-old cricketer further explained that batting became challenging after the rain as the pitch began to favor the Kiwi spinners. “After the rain, it became difficult to bat, so I decided to play slow against the spinners, almost like playing a Test match. Our goal was to score five to six runs per over against the spinners,” Azam elaborated.Azam also acknowledged the crucial partnership with Haris Sohail, emphasizing how it helped the team counter the spinners. “The partnership with Haris was a game-changer. We had lost wickets, and then he came in and started dominating the spinners while I was playing well against the fast bowlers,” he added. He went on to share a specific moment from the match, saying, “I told Haris Sohail that I wanted to sweep Mitchell Santner. When I successfully hit the sweep shot, it felt good, and from there, we gained a stronger hold on the match.”It is worth noting that Pakistan emerged victorious against New Zealand by six wickets, thanks to the significant 126-run partnership between Babar Azam and Haris Sohail. Haris Sohail’s inning, in particular, is considered one of the best performances of his ODI career. In the bowling department, Shaheen Shah Afridi was the standout performer, taking three crucial wickets, while Mohammad Amir dismissed the dangerous Martin Guptill early on in the innings. The century scored by Babar Azam remains a memorable moment in his cricketing journey, showcasing his skill and resilience under pressure in a crucial World Cup match.
