Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has stated that if his party comes into power through the upcoming general elections, they will work towards controlling inflation, acknowledging the concerns of the public. Similar sentiments were expressed by former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar when he assumed office in September.According to a report published in Dawn, during discussions with delegations from various Gulf countries affiliated with the PML-N, Nawaz Sharif made these statements in Dubai. After the removal of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s government through a vote of no confidence last year in April, inflation began to rise a few months later when the PML-N and its allied parties took power. Prior to Ishaq Dar’s tenure, former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail had made unpopular decisions based on the prior conditions set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which included the withdrawal of subsidies provided by the previous government. This contributed to the increase in inflation. When Ishaq Dar assumed office, promising a slowdown in the pace of price hikes, inflation had already crossed the 27% mark in August. After taking office, on September 28, he informed journalists that they would control inflation. However, according to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) measurements, inflation has continued to rise, reaching 30% in February after remaining between 20% and 30% for five months. The latest figures, released in May, show that inflation has reached a record high of 38%.Nawaz Sharif stated on Sunday that his party would gain control over all the issues faced by the public. These remarks by Nawaz Sharif come at a time when the central leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan Peoples Party is holding meetings in the United Arab Emirates, discussing the backdrop of the upcoming general elections expected at the end of the current year.
