“Lahore: Sources have revealed that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), two significant stakeholders in the federal government, have reached an agreement to dissolve the National Assembly on August 8, as reported by TDTOP News on Tuesday.

The current five-year constitutional term of the National Assembly is set to expire at midnight on August 12, which is four days after the agreed-upon dissolution date.

While August 9 and 10 were also discussed, it was decided to opt for August 8 to ensure a smooth dissolution process without any potential obstacles.

According to the law, if the summary for dissolution is not approved by the president, the assembly will automatically dissolve after 48 hours, giving the government sufficient time to achieve its goal of early dissolution.

Article 224 of the Constitution states, “A general election to the National Assembly or a provincial assembly shall be held within a period of sixty days immediately following the day on which the term of the assembly is due to expire unless the Assembly has been sooner dissolved.”

In the event of dissolution before the constitutional term, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is obligated to conduct general elections within 90 days, as outlined in Article 224(2) of the Constitution.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif recently stated at an event, “Next month, our government will complete its tenure. We will leave before the completion of our tenure, and an interim government will take over.”

Earlier, the PPP had proposed the dissolution of the assembly before its constitutional term.”
