Senator Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, recently designated as the new interim prime minister of Pakistan, emerges as a prominent political figure hailing from the province of Balochistan.
Having secured a Senate seat in 2018, Kakar has played an exceedingly active role in the political landscape of Balochistan. His engagement extends to his previous role as the spokesperson for the provincial government, which he occupied prior to his elevation to the upper house of parliament.
Renowned for his intellectual prowess, Kakar’s political involvement is underlined by his reputation as a thoughtful thinker within the country. Esteemed senior anchorperson Hamid Mir conveyed to TDTOP News that, in addition to his political endeavors, Kakar is widely regarded as a notable intellectual within Pakistan.
Notably, Kakar is affiliated with the Kakar tribe of Pashtun descent, thereby representing both Pashtuns and Baloch communities, a fact emphasized by Mir. Further enhancing his political ties, the senator maintains cordial relations with key mainstream political entities, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
His selection as the 8th interim head of the government was confirmed through an official statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on a Saturday. The decision culminated from a subsequent round of consultations between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Raja Riaz. The proposed selection was subsequently presented in a formal summary to President Arif Alvi.
It is worth noting that both the PML-N and PPP had underscored the possibility of a politician’s appointment to the coveted position of caretaker prime minister. Notably, the political parties comprising the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance prioritized the preservation of economic policies and the continuation of projects during the power transition.
