The military has launched an offensive against the Rapid Response Forces (RSF), its paramilitary rivals in the city. The most recent ceasefire, which was scheduled to end on Sunday night, has been extended for another three days by the RSF, but there are concerns that it may not be honored.

The number of casualties in the conflict has been reported to be over 500, with many more expected. A significant number of people remain trapped in Khartoum.

There is a power struggle between Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the army commander, and Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, the RSF chief. The two disagree on whether to integrate the RSF into the army.

Despite diplomatic efforts by neighbouring countries, the US, UK, and UN, the warring sides agreed to a temporary humanitarian ceasefire, which was later extended but did not hold. There is little indication that the military will respect the latest extension announced by the RSF on Sunday.
