Mamta Devi, a housewife from Bishnah village in Sainia Kothe, Jammu, transformed her life and became a successful businesswoman after joining a self-help group (SHG) under the Jammu and Kashmir State Rural Livelihoods Mission (Umeed). Mamta received financial assistance from the SHG and started operating a sweet and stitching business from home with other SHGs. Initially, people were apprehensive about the SHG scheme introduced by officials from Andhra Pradesh, but Mamta joined the group and gained financially with its help. The group grew, and Mamta invested in constructing two concrete rooms, helping her husband open a sweet shop, and starting various businesses like stitching cloth bags, making national flags, and operating sweet stalls. The SHGs provide poor women with skills and financial support for different products that have market value. Mamta’s success story has inspired many women to come forward and work with the help of SHGs.
