The future of Pakistan will remain uncertain until all political parties agree that the military establishment and judiciary must remain impartial, said Foreign Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Sunday. In a tweet, Bilawal recalled the Charter of Democracy (CoD) signed by PPP and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in 2006, pledging not to side with undemocratic forces to topple each other’s government. He appreciated the CoD and said that “it laid out a framework for political parties to abide by”. The statement comes amid concerns about the role of the military establishment in politics and the judiciary’s impartiality, with some opposition parties accusing them of influencing the outcome of the 2018 general elections in favour of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party.
